Intense UV, high humidity, and heavy summer rain all work against a log home’s finish faster here than almost anywhere else in the country.
Why Florida Shortens the Clock
UV rays break down the resins in a wood finish, and Florida gets more direct, high-intensity sun than most states. Add in humidity that keeps wood moisture levels elevated for much of the year, and afternoon storms that hit the same walls over and over, and it’s easy to see why south- and west-facing elevations often need attention well before the rest of the house.
Signs Your Finish Is Failing
- Fading, dull, or chalky sheen instead of a clean, even color
- Wood that feels dry or rough instead of smooth
- Water that soaks straight into the wood instead of beading up
- Cracked or shrinking caulk and chinking lines
- Dark staining or mildew growth on the surface
- Soft or spongy spots, which usually mean moisture has already gotten past the finish
Any one of these on its own is worth a look. A few of them together usually mean it’s time to schedule a maintenance coat before the underlying wood starts to pay the price.
What Happens If You Wait Too Long
A finish’s whole job is to keep water out of the wood. Once it fails, moisture gets into the logs, and that’s when small maintenance problems turn into log rot, insect damage, and structural repairs — the kind of work that costs many times more than a routine recoat would have.
